"I believe that when a man wears an article that I manufacture, his self-respect is increased because he knows that it is made by an honest manufacturer, who is honest with his employees" - Hamilton Carhartt Humble beginnings of the workwear clothing companyHamilton Carhartt, the companys founder, was born in 1855 in Macedon Lock, New York, and grew up in Southern Michigan. From the start, he displayed a unique entrepreneurial style. He modified his last name by adding an extra "t" to stand out from other businessmen. Heeding the helpful advice of his first potential buyer, he was determined to make his products different. After talking with a railroad engineer, he created an overall garment specifically for the railroad worker that had never been made before. Hamilton Carhartt began making workwear with the goal to set a standard of excellence to which all others would aspire. He started with only four sewing machines and about five employees, making his railroad overalls in duck and denim fabrics. He went from town to town visiting each railroad division, establishing a name in the overall business. With entrepreneurial vision and determination, Hamilton Carhartt established a brand
that has stood the test of time. Though the Great Depression had a devastating effect on
Carhartt leaving only 3 plants remaining in the U.S., the company prevailed again to
establish over 17 plants and 3 mills throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe in
the first half of the century. Carhartt Master Cloth was designed and woven by our mills
especially for use in Carhartt clothing and was pledged to be the best cloth that could be produced. |
